2005: Worst Year Ever December 30, 2005
Posted by Sina in : Daily , 2commentsI would rather die than repeat this year. It was horrible. Just horrible. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. No matter how bad it was, even when I thought there was no way it could get worse….it did. Much worse…infinitely worse. Just bad, followed by bad, followed by more bad, followed by pain, and more pain, followed by more and more of all of the above.
If I was allowed to do things differently, I would. Much differently. I’d have more sense. Much more sense. But even then, I’d still rather just not go through it. If i had to go through it again, I’d probably kill myself. Seriously.
Sigh. That’s just my fate.

The Monty Hall Problem December 17, 2005
Posted by Sina in : Daily , add a commentThe outcome of ths problem is so beautiful that I couldn’t help myself but to post it here and not just on my math page. Here it is:
“You are on a game show on television. On this game show the idea is to win a car as a prize. The game show host shows you three doors. He says that there is a car behind one of the doors and that there are goats behind the other two. He asks you to pick a door. You pick a door but the door is not opened. Then the game show host opens one of the doors you didn’t pick to show a goat (because he knows what is behind each door). Then he says that you have one final chance to change your mind before the doors are opened, and asks you if you want to change your mind and pick the other unopened door instead. What do you do?
Using your intuition you might think that there is a 50-50 chance that there is a car behind each door. But according to Marilyn vos Savant you should always change and pick the other door because chances are 2 in 3 that there will be a car behind that door. 92% of the readers wrote in to Marilyn and said she was wrong, many of whom have Ph.D’s in mathematics.”
But Marilyn is right, do you see why? If you’re really curious and want to see why, I posted the solution here (look at all comments, but the final solution is in the last comment I posted).
Amazing, huh?
Differential Equations II December 14, 2005
Posted by Sina in : Daily , add a commentI’m in love.
Remember Winnie from The Wonder Years? She was on some show the other day, don’t know what it was called though. It’s that show with the "Bandcamp" girl from American Pie. Anyway, it turns out that Winnie, in real life, is a math lover!! Even took time off acting to do her undergrad in mathematics! Wow. Don’t believe me? Check her site www.danicamckellar.com and click on "Mathematics". She even has a section dedicated to answering math questions that you email her!
If only she were Jessica Alba, if only.
Differential Equations December 13, 2005
Posted by Sina in : Daily , add a commentI realized how late my exam was when I stepped on the subway and saw everyone wearing Leafs clothing. They were all coming back from the game (and I thought the game was still going on!). Sigh.
So I get home, the house is quiet and empty. Where is everyone? I knock on my brother’s door and ask: "Where’s mom and dad?" He replies: "Sleeping."
Sleeping? Wow, my exam was really late. Damn. Well let’s see: It went from 7pm to 10pm, meaning I got home past 11pm. Wow. No wonder I was getting sleepy towards the end…I hope did okay then.
Question: What would be hotter than Jessica Alba? (Highlight for answer)
Answer: A Jessica Alba that can solve differential equations.
Book Club December 11, 2005
Posted by Sina in : Daily , 3commentsWouldn’t it be cool if we started a book club???? We’d read books and, like, talk about it and stuff. And everyone would be jealous because we’d have our own social group…where we drink tea, eat cookies, and talk about books. And then Oprah would give us cars or something.
Anyone?
Dear Yorkville December 9, 2005
Posted by Sina in : Daily , add a commentDear Yorkville,
I’m not rich or famous. But I’m always there for you – in the summer and winter, rain and shine, filmfest or christmas – always enjoying my ice cream. Please don’t be so fickle and only treat me nice when everyone else ignores you, that’s not fair. You remind me of someone I know, and that’s not a good thing. I’m here all year round. So please stop.
Thank you.
Christmas List December 7, 2005
Posted by Sina in : Daily , add a commentI think I should write a Christmas list too:
(in no particular order)
1) Good luck
2) Summer
3) Time machine
4) Light Saber
That is all.
Just for the record December 6, 2005
Posted by Sina in : Daily , 1 comment so farI would hate to date Carrie from Sex and the City. She’s slutty, trashy, selfish, a compulsive liar, and isn’t even pretty. She’s irrational and makes dumb choices, and then she wonders why her life sucks and she can’t find a man. And, really, she wears the ugliest clothes sometimes (actually, often). But above all, she’s just self-centered and materialistic.
I want to stab her.
I wanted to write this down to make sure I don’t forget.
